Software Heritage (SWH) is an initiative launched by INRIA in 2016, and supported by UNESCO, which aims to collect, preserve, share and archive all publicly available software in source code form.
HAL is the national open archive platform, enabling the deposit of software source code. HAL does not archive the software itself, but rather a notice and a link to the SWH archive.
The two form the diptych for the preservation and referencing of research software source codes.
