Developed in 2001 by the Center for Direct Scientific Communication (CCSD) as part of the National plan for Open Science (PNSO), HAL is a multidisciplinary open archive. The CCSD also hosts tools such as Sciencesconf, which is used to organise scientific events, and Épisciences, which is used to publish epireviews, both of which are based in particular on the HAL preprint archive.
HAL offers permanent archiving and open access to scholarly work. It is the open archive platform chosen by the entire French scientific and university community.
University Grenoble Alpes opened its HAL UGA portal in 2013. HAL has been the UGA’s bibliographic repository since 2022 (UGA Open Science Charter in french).
