There are several ways for the community to make scientific publications freely available:
- deposit the publications in HAL or another open archive (Green Open Access), whatever the type of production (post-print of an article, research report, poster, conference paper, thesis or HDR)
- publish in native open-access journals (Gold or Diamond Open Access)
Both practices are recommended by most institutions and funders.
To take into account the challenges of open access to scientific publications, Grenoble Alpes University’s charter and master plan recommend:
- submit the validated version for publication (or post-print) in HAL in accordance with the terms of the French Law for a Digital Republic (maximum delay of 6 months for articles in STM disciplines and 12 months for SHS disciplines)
- publish in a native open-access journal. For this purpose, it is preferable to select journals where publication is free for both reader and author (i.e. without payment of Article Processing Charges).
In 2016, UGA signed the Appel de Jussieu pour la science ouverte et la bibliodiversité to promote editorial diversity and avoid excessive concentration. In this appeal, “priority must be given to publishing business models that do not involve payment either by authors to publish, or by readers to access texts”.
The UGA supports several initiatives implementing a fair economic model, such as the Centre Mersenne for open scientific publishing.
It is also possible to deposit and publish articles on pre-print databases such as SocarXiv and BiorXiv, or to choose alternative publication methods such as Peer Community In and Episcience.
Doctoral students can choose to make their thesis available on the HAL Theses platform immediately or at a later date.
